Asessments

At BMI all Assessments for children with a diagnoses of Autism are based on standardized AFLS assessment tools like.

  • Assessment of Basic Language & Learning - Revised (ABLLS-R)
  • Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment (VB-MAPP) and
  • AFLS (Assessment of Functional Living Skills)

ABLLS-R

(James Partington, 2009)

ABLLS-R helps to make an assessment, curriculum guide, and skills tracking system for use with children who have autism or other developmental disabilities.

It allows to identify skils in 25 domain areas like Language (Mand, Tact, Intraverbal, Receptive, Visual Performance, Spontaneous Communication, Generalization, Grammer & Syntax), academic (Classroom routines, English, Math, Group Skills), Socialization, self-help (Eating, Dressing, Toileting, Brushing, etc), and motor skills (Gross motor & Fine Motor) and then implement and monitor individualized intervention.

The Protocol provides precise, criterion-referenced information about a child's existing skills and the conditions under which the child uses these skills. It also identifies weaknesses that prevent the child from learning new skills, taking into account the child's motivation to respond, ability to attend to complex environmental stimuli, ability to generalize skills, and tendency to spontaneously use those skills.

VBMAPP

(Mark Sundberg)

The VB-MAPP is a language and social skills assessment program for children with autism or other developmental disabilities.

It offers a systematic way to evaluate children with autism or other developmental disabilities, assessing current language and social skills, identifying impediments to learning, analyzing needs, guiding curriculum, and tracking growth. It is based on established developmental milestones and behavior analysis. The VB-MAPP is a criterion-referenced assessment tool, curriculum guide, and skill tracking system. It provides a clear and accurate picture of the whole child, identifying barriers that impede learning and informing IEP development.

Milestones Assessment samples the child's existing skills in 16 areas, measuring 170 milestones sequenced across 3 developmental levels (up to 48 months).
Barriers Assessment focuses on 24 language and learning impediments that may be preventing a child from mastering new skills.
Transition Assessment summarizes skills in 18 areas, indicating the child's readiness to move to a less restricted educational setting.

AFLS

(James Partington & Michael Muller, 2012)

The AFLS is comprised of The AFLS Guide and three unique assessment protocols that assess functional, practical, and essential skills of everyday life.

It makes an assessment on Basic self-help, self-care, self-management, hygiene, routines, and core communication skills are assessed in this module. These essential skills, will have a profound impact on a learner's ability to live independently, to be successful in school, and to take advantage of various social and recreational activities throughout the learner's life. It also makes an assessment on Home Skills Assessment Protocol provides an essential review of skills required for living in a home. Basic and advanced home skills of preparing and eating meals at home, cleaning tasks around the home, clothing, laundry, leisure skills, and the day-to-day mechanics of living in a home are assessed. Finally it makes an assessment on how an individual participates in the community begins with learning to physically navigate safely around all the common aspects of sidewalks, streets, and signs along with people encountered while walking or while being transported. To be able to independently shop in grocery and department stores, shop at the mall, and eat at fast food or sit-down restaurants requires a wide variety of skills. The ability to tell time and use time related concepts, making and keeping appointments, using a phone, and other skills to help learners stay connected and interact with others in the community are also assessed in this module.

Assessment reports provide a direction to parents on the child's strong and weak areas. It informs about the barriers to learning so program planning can be individualized as per the child's needs. At BMI for children on our regular programs, we conduct a VB-MAPP Assessment for each student. The VB-MAPP grid is maintained for each child routinely to monitor progress.

Occupational Therapy

Occupational Therapy is a scientific procedure for gross motor & fine motor development of the child. AT BMI we provide OT services currently at our Bangalore - Sharjapur Center and have plans to offer the same at BMI- Noida

Speech Therapy & Consultations

Speech-language pathologists are therapists who specialize in treating language problems and speech disorders. With early screening and detection of people at risk, speech therapists often lead the way in helping with the diagnosis of autism and in making referrals to other specialists.

BMI works in coordination with Speech & Language Therapists and has two Consultants on board based at Bangalore.

Distance Support

BMI, in keeping with it aim of providing quality intervention to families with children with autism living in areas where such services are not available has been offering continued supervision and program guidance through Skype meetings and video reviews.

To avail distance consultation services through Skype, families need to have an initial face to face assessment at any of our centers or spend few hours of intervention at any of the BMI centers in India. BMI has so far supported families living in countries like Maldives, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, Dubai, London, and in India for families visiting us from Bhubaneswar, Chennai, Coimbatore, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Jagaon, Ludhiana, Tirupati, etc in India.

Home Consultations

Different models of behavioral intervention suit different families. Behavior Momentum's in home consultation will provide the same high standard of intervention based on the principles of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) available in our intervention centers, except the intervention will applied in the natural setting of your home. This model will suit families with transportation or scheduling restraints which prevent their child attending the center or where a student has difficulty generalizing skills across different environments and people.

Just like services at our centers training is provided by a BCBA with the additional benefit of training being available to all significant individuals in the child's life such as parents, siblings, grandparents, therapists and other caregivers.

Upon enrolling in the home program our consultant will provide a full assessment of your child's skills across numerous skill domains such as communication, language comprehension, academics, self help and leisure skills. Based on this assessment our expert will provide you with an individualized education plan (IEP) and with the skills to implement it effectively. Regular follow up meetings will then allow for on going training and for updating your child's IEP.
